Monica R. Martinez
Monica Martinez is a Senior Fellow for the KnowledgeWorks Foundation, a unique position only recently created to support research into the redesign of Ohio's high schools through the Ohio High School Transformation Initiative. She is one of the Foundation's leading resident experts on high school reform, providing strategic assistance in this area and to the Foundation's President. Dr. Martinez's work at higher education institutions has focused on issues related to educational access and achievement for low-income and minority students. She is a frequent speaker on issues of education reform, including national high school redesign strategies and their relationship to student achievement and college preparedness.
Prior to her fellowship, Dr. Martinez founded the National High School
Alliance, a partnership of over forty organizations sharing a common
commitment to promoting the excellence, equity, and development of high
school-age youth. She also served as a Senior Associate at the Institute
for Educational Leadership (IEL), overseeing IEL's work with the
Pathways to College Network. In addition she was Project Director for
the National Clearinghouse for School Reform (NCCSR); the Theme High
Schools Network (THiSNET.org); and the Catalog of Core Research on
Secondary School Reform.
Dr. Martinez has contributed to many research efforts to reform
education, including a University of Maryland effort to improve the
quality of teaching through engagement in collaborative action research;
and research conducted at the New York University Institute for
Education and Public Policy to support the development of small schools
where parents and students can share in school governance. Dr. Martinez
received her Ph.D. and M.A. in Higher Education Administration from the
School of Education at New York University, and her bachelor's degree
from Baylor University.
