The National High School Center would like to share the archived version of our most recent Webinar that features best practices and strategies for English language learners (ELLs) at the high school level, as well as an update on our Ask the Expert column.

English Language Learner Webinar Now Available Online

Webinar image The relatively high dropout rates and persistent achievement gaps among the growing population of ELLs in U.S. high schools make it imperative to share research-based approaches and promising practices that have been effective in increasing educational outcomes for all students.

 

The National High School Center recently presented a Webinar, "Effectively Educating English Language Learners at the High School Level: What Research and Practice Tell Us."Held May 14, 2009, the Webinar:

  • built awareness for the current body of research on educating ELLs at the high school level;
  • discussed best practices from a practitioner's perspective;
  • explored how effective practices can be integrated to inform district, state, and national policies; and
  • highlighted the National High School Center's recently released suite of products on English language learners.

 

Featured presenters included:

  • Ana Diaz-Booz, Principal, School of International Business (San Diego, CA), 2009 California Distinguished High School
  • Neal Finkelstein, Senior Research Scientist, WestEd
  • Libia S. Gil, Senior Advisor, National High School Center and Senior Fellow, American Institutes for Research

Join Our Online Dialogue on High School Literacy

Terry Salinger It is critical for high school students to be able to effectively read and comprehend written material to succeed in life, work, and postsecondary education. Terry Salinger, Managing Director and Chief Scientist for Reading Research at the American Institutes for Research, is currently leading a discussion on best practices for high school literacy. She is available throughout the month of June to facilitate an online dialogue.
